Services for Health Professionals are designed to help set up and provide high quality, clinically effective Cancer Risk Counseling services, including counseling for genetic testing. Some cancer risk information may surprise you. For example, did you know ... ?


Cancers are due to changes in the genes - changes that usually occur after birth. Most cancers are not hereditary. Women whose breast cancers measure less than 1 cm in size (a little less than half an inch) have a prognosis of better than 95% to 12 years. Not all women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation will be diagnosed with cancer. Individuals with no family history of cancer may have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation that can be inherited. Not all women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation have the same risk of breast, ovarian, or colon cancer. An increased hereditary susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer can be inherited through males as well as females. Individuals with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation frequently develop breast and ovarian cancer after age 50. Most women who have both a mother and a sister with breast cancer will not develop breast cancer themselves. Most types of benign breast disease do not significantly increase the risk of breast cancer. A woman with a strong family history of cancer who has no evidence of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation can still be at significantly increased risk of breast and other cancers. Women who have a mother or sister with breast cancer and who take replacement hormones at menopause are not at increased risk of breast cancer compared to non-users with similar histories.
